Guided Studio Offers Personalized Assistance

The Anderson Arts Center offers Guided Studio sessions in a variety of artistic mediums.

Anderson Artists Guild President Chet Lawson leads the Thursday sessions, which focus on drawing and painting and meet from 6:30-9:30 p.m. starting this week on Sept. 5. The painting can be oil, watercolor, or acrylic. Participants must register ahead of time and bring their own painting materials (canvas, paint, paintbrush). A desktop easel is supplied, along with water and paper towels.

The cost is $20 per session.

The idea is to bring a piece in progress or a new project and to receive help as you work on it in a studio setting among other artists.

So far, the sessions average two or three participants, which allows plenty of time for individualized assistance. “I enjoy being able to help people, to share what I’ve learned over the years as an architect and the last few years as an artist,” said Lawson. “I enjoy that it’s one-on-one, highly individual, reactive teaching in several mediums and with different levels of ability.”

Comments from some of his students include “Chet has exposed me to new techniques and helped improve my understanding of the basics” and “He is able to see a multitude of small elements needing improvement here and there and suggest simple methods for how to make the improvements.”

Lawson’s sessions will continue through December 19 and resume again in the new year.

There are also Guided Studio sessions in ceramics, as well as an Experienced Potters Studio. The costs for these are $35 per session and $75 per month, respectively.
