Two AAG Members in Spartanburg Juried Show
The 2020 Juried Exhibition presented by the Artists Collective of Spartanburg opened on Sept.15 and runs through Oct. 17. The jurors were Alice Sebrell and Connie Bostic.
The $2500 first place award went to Gregory Wilkin for his oil painting Harriet Hancock Center, Melrose Heights, Columbia. The $1000 second place award went to Seth Scheving of Anderson for Ignorance Was Bliss (watercolor and ink). The $500 third place award went to Bennett Stowe for Dining Room (acrylic, charcoal, and oil pastel). Five merit awards were also presented.
Two Anderson Artists Guild members had works accepted into the show. Mary McDonough’s In Honor Of (above left) is a collage on paper. “This piece was part of a pair of offerings for a book cover job I had in early January 2020,” she said. “The other piece was selected for the cover, and I kept this one. I like this piece; it came together really fast for me. It's made from painted and printed papers.”
Evelyn Beck’s fiber piece, Sushi (above right), is based on a cousin’s photo taken at a restaurant in Tokyo. “The appeal of the image was how the workers operated like an assembly line under the very human gaze of the supervisor,” she said. “I gave myself the challenge of working with a limited color palette and of using negative space—two things I instinctively do not do very often.”
